The Marion-Ralls Regional Port Authority (MRRPA) exists to grow the economy of Marion and Ralls Counties through promoting transportation, logistics and revitalization. We are represented by a volunteer board of commissioners. Our goal is to generate efficient, effective and innovative transportation and development solutions, to support our existing employers, as well as those we are working to attract to the area. Our tools can save and renovate underutilized buildings, buildings of historic value and blighted properties. We can use them to advance riverfront development.
In 2023, the MRRPA received a $700,000 Brownfields Coalition Assessment Grant from the EPA.
“The Marion-Ralls Regional Port Authority is extremely pleased to be selected for an EPA Brownfields Assessment Coalition Grant,” Corey Mehaffy, representative of the port authority. “These funds will allow the Port to build on its brownfields program, providing the necessary environmental assessments and planning work needed for resilient redevelopment for the region.”
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a brownfield is a property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
According to the U.S. EPA, approximately $20 of funding was leveraged for each $1 of EPA brownfields funds in 2022. Furthermore, an average of 10.6 jobs are created for every $100,000 of brownfields grant funds spent. Brownfields grants have been maximized to their full potential and are creating numerous local jobs.
